In 1968, Patek Philippe introduced the Ellipse series—a golden ellipse drawn from the golden ratio. This was watchmaking as a blend of geometry, philosophy, and sculpture.

While most dress watches clung to the safety of round cases, the Ellipse glided effortlessly into view. Perfection at first glance.  This mid-1980s reference, framed in 18k yellow gold, is pure elegance.  The dial, often mistaken for lapis lazuli, is in fact “blue gold”: solid 18k gold transformed through a patented process to evoke a deep, iridescent blue. Gold stick markers and matching hands float effortlessly across its surface. The pairing of blue and gold is timeless. Throughout history, gold has symbolized the sun, power, permanence, and authority, while blue has represented the heavens, royalty, truth, and loyalty. In color theory, they sit at opposite extremes, and when brought together, they create balance, harmony,

The Ellipse was the work of Jean-Daniel Rubeli, not Gerald Genta, as is so often misattributed. Rubeli, Patek Philippe’s Head of Creation at the time, reimagined the wristwatch not simply as an object of timekeeping but as an expression of harmony, proportion, a perfect jewel on the wrist.

We love what happens when Swiss precision meets Italian modernism. Time and color are given a shape worthy of eternity.
