A 21st century twist on a watch that is synonymous with the 20th, this stainless steel Cartier Tank Solo Panthere is perfect for the fashion-forward individualist.
Originally conceived amidst the throes of World War I, the Tank was inspired by the birds-eye view of a Renault FT-17 tank. Extending the the vertical sidebars (or “brancards) at the top and bottom of the case not only mirrored the look of a tank’s treads, but it also allowed for a seamless integration of the watchband into the case, giving the watch as a whole a cleverly sleek and slender look. The very first Tank was gifted to the U.S. General John Pershing by Louis Cartier himself as a token of France’s appreciation for their alliance with the United States, but also as a sly marketing move. Normally a watch so elegant might only be considered to be for women, but after appearing on the wrist of one of the highest ranking officers in the American military, it became equally coveted by men and women alike.
Over the course of the next several decades, variations of the watch began appearing in the collections of some of the most renowned figures of the 20th century: Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy, Clark Gable. Andy Warhol famously remarked, “I don’t wear a Cartier Tank to tell the time. In fact, I never wind it. I wear a Tank because it’s the watch to wear.”
This Tank Solo Panthere was a limited addition and features an animalistic black and brown design that extends from the dial to the watchband, making this a must-have for the sophisticated collector with a barely concealed wild side.
