The Cartier Santos Ronde is a little like the 1975 film The Stepford Wives; largely overlooked upon its initial release, it took years to garner the appreciation it deserved. Unfortunately, the similarities don’t end there. Much like how reprints and home media pressings of the classic horror satire were inexplicably discontinued, this watch ceased production after roughly a year in 1997. Its legacy is now kept alive by collectors who specifically seek out the most highly treasured anomalies of the watch world.
Made entirely of 18 karat yellow gold and bearing few similarities to the original Santos (which itself was the company’s first wristwatch, made for and named after Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumond), this Santos Ronde almost presents itself more as the watch equivalent of the Aldo Cipullo Love Bracelet. Both are dotted with distinctive screw heads that match the metal of which the timepiece is comprised. These can be found lining the edges of the Santos Ronde’s bracelet, as well as around the bezel. The weighty, solid gold case houses an ivory dial, with Arabic numerals for the date at three o’clock, and Roman numerals circling the face for the time.
A seamless blend of simplicity and oddity, boldness and elegance, the Cartier Santos Ronde is as thrilling an edition as there is to any collection of rare timepieces.
