A double-signed dial turns a standard luxury watch into an elite collector's piece. This 1980s Chopard reference 5111/1 carries two names on its gold dial: the Swiss watchmaker’s signature above the hands and Tiffany & Co.’s below. These watches represent a time when watchmakers relied on a trusted network of the world's most prestigious retailers to reach high rollers and collectors. A Chopard watch stamped with the Tiffany & Co. logo is a historical artifact of a high-society partnership.
Chopard’s development as a jewellery watch house accelerated after Karl Scheufele III acquired the company in 1963. The Scheufele family brought experience in jewellery production to a Swiss firm founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in Sonvilier in 1860. Goldwork and diamond setting became central to the company’s identity alongside watchmaking.
Here, a 22mm case with clipped corners is bordered by round diamonds. The gold dial has two hands, no numerals and no date aperture. Its broad bracelet carries closely spaced, rippling lines, contrasting with the polished edges of the clasp. A raised Chopard initial marks the fastening. Case and bracelet form an elegant and continuous piece of wrist jewellery.
Made in Switzerland, the watch combines 18k yellow gold with a manually wound movement and weighs 51.5 grams: specifications that place its mechanical construction within an object shaped equally by jewellery design and retail history. A sparkling, beautiful watch made rarer still by its double-signed dial, a feature that had almost entirely disappeared by the 1990s.
