OMEGA STAINLESS STEEL SEAMASTER AUTOMATIC c.1979

Vintage Omega Seamaster, Stainless Steel, Automatic Movement with Day and Date Function and Deep Blue Dial. c.1979

The Seamaster is famous for two things: overtaking the Rolex Submariner to become the official watch of James Bond, and for being Omega’s most varied line of timepieces.  While having been first introduced in 1948, the Seamaster finds much of its origin in 1932.  Renowned French diver (and creator of the very first scuba tank and mask) Yves Le Prieur helped to popularize Omega’s Marine Watch, making it a favorite among men of action the world over.

Seeking to capitalize on their relatively newfound reputation among adventurers, Omega developed and released the Seamaster in conjunction with the company’s 100th anniversary, as well as Britain’s hosting of the first post-World War II Summer Olympics. The release of the watch was particularly appropriate, as it was based in part on the waterproof watches Omega had provided British soldiers during the war. Its most notable upgrade from its predecessors was an O-ring gasket that provided stronger waterproofing, a design element inspired by the submarines of the British Royal Navy.

This 1979 stainless steel timepiece is one of the more obscure variations of the Seamaster. Its rounded square case and deep blue dial give it a look that strongly telegraphs the era that birthed it. One could easily imagine it having once wrapped the wrist of a Wall Street executive sauntering through the crowd at Studio 54.
