Thierry Hermès founded his saddlery in 1837, harnessing horses for the Parisian aristocracy, the leather discipline from which every later object, including the watch, would descend. The house’s first brush with the wristwatch is a 1912 photograph: Émile Hermès’ daughter Jacqueline, wearing a pocket watch fitted into a leather bracelet the family workshop made for her. Hermès began selling timepieces in 1928. Royal commissions followed. Jean-Louis Dumas incorporated La Montre Hermès in Switzerland in 1978.
