VICTORIAN 18K YELLOW GOLD AND SILVER AND 1.0CTS COLOMBIAN EMERALD and 1.50CTS OLD EUROPEAN CUT DIAMOND HALO RING c.1850s

Victorian 18k Yellow Gold Colombian Emerald and Diamond Halo Ring c.1850.

The very picture of opulence unrestrained, the halo ring has been a prized piece of jewelry throughout the most thriving periods of the past two-hundred years. Having first appeared in the Georgian era, they found the height of their popularity during Queen Victoria’s reign. Pieces such as this saw a precious gemstone acting as a centerpiece while several slightly smaller diamonds circled around it, forming a lavish “halo”. And while this particular style might have fallen out of favor during times of immense strife such as the Great Depression and World War II, it remained a staple of old Hollywood glamour throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

This stunning ring from the 1850s features an entirely un-enhanced Colombian emerald that weighs in at almost a full carat. Eight gold prongs grip its edges for a vivid, eye-popping contrast. An equal number of old mine cut diamonds — making for a total of 1.3 carats — alternate with the prongs to form the halo, each one set in silver (a common practice for Victorian jewelry, as it was the most formidable metal capable of being molded for the difficult task of holding a diamond). The entire display is set atop a band of 18-karat yellow gold to complete the picture of sheer luxury.
