We adore a vintage Cartier Santos. When it enters a room, you immediately take notice. This reference with its octagonal shape, gold dial, and diamond details prompt a triple take. Model 0906, dating to the early 1980s, is crafted entirely in 18k yellow gold. The octagonal case is framed by an 18k yellow-gold bezel, pavé diamonds, and secured with exposed screws, establishing the Santos’ unmistakable architectural identity with an added sparkle.
On this reference, the Santos case does not terminate in conventional lugs. Instead, the case flows outward into squared, architectural extensions that are technically part of the case construction but function visually as the first bracelet links. It is precisely on these squared end-link panels—above and below the case—that diamonds are set. They sit flush within the gold, aligned symmetrically, and echo the geometry of the bezel screws. Another surprising feature that elevates the watch from a sport to a dress watch.
The dial is signed “Cartier,” with “Swiss” at six o’clock, and dispenses with Roman numerals entirely. Sword-style hands are paired with a central sweeping seconds hand, keeping the layout clean and legible. Another distinct feature is the diamond-set crown, a rare and highly collectible detail. Inside beats an automatic movement, reflecting the era’s emphasis on accuracy and everyday reliability. The watch is accompanied by a Cartier travel pouch.
