VICTORIAN 18K YELLOW GOLD, DIAMOND AND NATURAL PEARL STARBURST NECKLACE c.1880s
19th Century 18k Yellow Gold and Natural Pearl and an Old Mine Cut Starburst c.1880s
Throughout the second half of the 18th century, fascination with the extraterrestrial was on a steady incline. Between 1865 and 1898, notable science fiction novels such as From the Earth to the Moon, Across the Zodiac, A Journey in Other Wolds, and Edison’s Conquest of Mars enthralled readers the world over with their vibrant depictions of life among the stars. This newfound way of seeing and imagining what lay beyond our own sky enchanted the Victorian era to the point where it started to take hold in fashion as well as fiction.
This fantastic Victorian necklace captures the era’s excitement and curiosity with the celestial. 18 karat yellow gold is molded into a magnificent starburst whose sparkle is provided by sixty natural pearls, and a single old mine cut diamond provides its stellar core. The pendant hangs from a simple yellow gold chain, so as not to distract from its heavenly splendor.
A special necklace that conjures images of George Méliès’ landmark silent film A Trip to the Moon as well as baby Kal-El’s interplanetary pram in Richard Donner’s iconic 1978 portrayal of Superman, this exceptional piece is for the collector never content with the earthbound.
