1990s BUCCELLATI 18K GOLD AUDACHRON MODEL 5011

Throughout his life, early 20th century jeweler Mario Buccellati was affectionately known as the Prince of Goldsmiths thanks to a nickname bestowed upon him by poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. Looking at this timepiece from the 1990s, it is apparent that his legacy as such is in no danger of fading.

Founded in 1919, Mario’s namesake company quickly became known for its delicately complex textural designs. Images of nature and Etruscan patterns were expertly etched into precious metals for a look that was — and continues to be— at once classic and contemporary. One such piece was even commissioned by Pope Pius XII as a gift for Princess Margaret in 1949 to commemorate the first visit of a British royal to the Vatican City in hundreds of years.

This rare Audachron is comprised of an 18 karat yellow gold case and clasp attached to an indigo alligator strap. The dial is emblazoned with a stunning engraving of an eagle, lending the case a passing resemblance to a gold coin. A wearable piece of art as only Buccellati could produce, this gorgeous watch — though deceptively simple at first glance — is sure to draw gasps of admiration from the most distinguished timepiece enthusiasts.
