1974 ROLEX CELLINI KING MIDAS MODEL 4017

The origin story of the Cellini King Midas is one of mystery, instant celebrity, and nods to the mythical rulers of the old world.

First appearing in 1964, the King Midas is believed by many watch enthusiasts and sources within the industry to have been the work of legendary timepiece designer Gérald Genta. And while the rumour remains unconfirmed by Rolex, several components of the King Midas bear Genta’s trademarks; chief among them being the strong, angular lines that bring the case to a point at its crown. This was inspired by the visual of the sun resting atop the Parthenon in ancient Athens. True to its namesake, the original King Midas was 200 grams of solid gold, with the crown pointing to the left; a reference to the infamous left hand of Midas himself and its decadent transformative abilities, which also happens to make it an illustrious adornment to the wrist of any left-handed watch aficionado. Only a thousand were produced, as they were meant exclusively for only the most discerning and eclectic of collectors. The most notable name to procure one of these ultra-rare pieces was himself a king in his own right: none other than Elvis Presley.

This 1974 variation, with its tasteful white gold case and a subtle metallic dark blue leather band, is a declaration of cool, quiet confidence, as well as a bold but razor-sharp sense of style.
