EDWARDIAN PLATINUM AND 2.80CTS OLD EUROPEAN CUT DIAMOND RING c.1910s

Edwardian Platinum and 2.80cts. Old European Cut Diamond Ring c.1910s

The Edwardian era saw a massive increase in the production and popularity of platinum jewelry on account of the advent of the oxyacetylene torch, the first torch capable of burning hot enough to soften platinum. It’s all too fitting that it was this period that saw the beginnings of white jewelry, as it seemed to represent an end of innocence before two world wars swept the globe.

This lavish ring from roughly 1910 is one such artifact of the waning days of the Belle Époque. On top of its gorgeously precise platinum detailing (made possible through an exceptionally difficult method known as piercing), it carries approximately 2.8 carats worth of hand cut diamonds, making this piece an exceptional specimen of an arduously crafted style of jewelry that was, at the time, still in its infancy.
